WHAT'S IN A NAME?
My approach to project management is both deliberate and collaborative, characterized by the motto "plan the work and work the plan." Good project management starts at the outset of a project with engagement of the owner, other stakeholders and project team members in the development of a project plan that clearly defines the scope, schedule and budget for the completed work and how it will be delivered. The project plan establishes the expectations for the project. The project manager must then lead the project team in the faithful execution of the plan, while skillfully navigating unforeseen circumstances as they arise, to ensure delivery of the desired results.
If the project manager and team deliver results that meet—or exceed—expectations, then the project will be a success, the owner will be satisfied—or delighted—with the completed work, the project team will be satisfied—or delighted—with their accomplishments, and everyone will be happy. Conversely, if the results do not meet expectations, then there will be no joy in Mudville. Thus, it can be said that happiness equals results minus expectations, or H = R – E.
That equation succinctly captures my philosophy of project management: clearly define expectations and then deliver results that meet or exceed those expectations. Hence the name, HRE Project Management Consulting.
Define expectations and deliver.
