WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Good project management starts with engaging the client, other stakeholders, and the project delivery team at the beginning to develop a project plan that clearly defines the scope of work, schedule, budget, and how the project will be delivered—the expectations for the project. The project manager must then lead the delivery team in the faithful execution of the plan, while skillfully navigating unforeseen circumstances as they arise, to ensure delivery of the desired results.
If the project manager and delivery team do their jobs well and deliver results that meet or exceed expectations, then the project will be successful and everyone will be happy. Conversely, if the results do not meet expectations, then there will be no joy in Mudville, demonstrating that the degree of happiness experienced by all involved is equal to results minus expectations, or H = R - E.
That equation succinctly captures my project management philosophy: clearly define project expectations and then deliver results that meet or exceed those expectations, ensuring that my clients and the people that I work for and with are happy not only with the end result but with how we got there.
Hence the name, HRE Project Management Consulting.
